I took the lovely Ms Thothythoth to the Slayer/Megadeth concert last night. With the exception of a few Metallica and AC-DC songs, she doesn't really like heavy metal. She knows how much I like both bands and she has always been tolerant of my love for 80s metal. I thought she was kidding when she suggested that we go to the concert. She admitted that she had never seen a mosh pit before. The idea intrigued her.
And if you have never seen one or been in one, dear reader, that's reason enough to go.
So we went. She didn't care much for Kerry King's guitar solos, but she was a good sport; taking pictures of people's tattoos and asking strangers which Dave Mustaine they preferred; pre- or post-drug addiction.
Most people just looked at us like we were crazy. I think that's an appropriate response, really.
Of course, we didn't go near the mosh pit because we didn't want to spill our cocktails. Your priorities change as you get older, natch. We had a wonderful time nonetheless.
Ya know... at one point in my life, I would have had no problem deciding what to wear to a heavy metal concert. Ripped jeans, tee shirt, boots.
Done.
But I don't dress like that any more. 10 years of working in the corporate white-collar world has changed me; I don't even own a pair of ripped-up concert jeans any more. I had given no thought at all to what I would wear until we were about to leave for the show. I didn't have time to panic about it so I wore black pants and a black button-down. The lovely and fetching Ms. Thothythoth wore a black skirt and a black scoop-neck top with black strappy shoes.
Rowr.
Wait, dear reader, here's the best part...
When we arrived, we walked up to the gate to present our tickets, and the gentleman at the door asked:
"Are you here for the... (pause)... concert?"
"Yes", I said. "Of course, dude. Why do you ask?"
"Well, you're just... a little over-dressed... compared to everyone else... I thought maybe you were lost..."
"Really? I just realized a few hours ago that I am no longer able to dress like a teenager."
And yes. We were a bit overdressed, but I'd like to think that we helped to make the Slayer/Megadeth concert a little
classy.
